Google Merchant Center: Image too small [image link] · Image too small
Your main product image is too small
What Google's message means
The main image is smaller than Google accepts. Google's image spec now lists at least 500 × 500 pixels, and Google has announced that this applies to all products from January 31, 2027.
Why it matters
Products without a usable image are disapproved. Larger, sharp images also perform better.
Common causes on Shopify
- The first image is a thumbnail or a swatch, not the full product photo.
- Supplier images imported at low resolution.
- An image app resized or compressed originals.
How to fix it
- 1Upload a larger image: at least 500 × 500 px, ideally around 1500 × 1500 px as Google recommends, and no more than 64 megapixels or 16 MB.
- 2Make it the first (featured) image of the product in Shopify.
- 3Remove tiny thumbnails or icons from the first image slot.
In Shopify: Drag the large image to the first position in the product's Media section.
How to stop it coming back
- Shoot or request product photos at about 1500 × 1500 px, which Google recommends.
- Audit existing products before the 500 × 500 px rule applies to all products on January 31, 2027.
Common questions
- What size should my product images be?
- Google's current spec lists at least 500 × 500 pixels and recommends around 1500 × 1500 pixels. Files can be up to 64 megapixels and 16 MB.
- Do I need to change images that work today?
- Google has announced the 500 × 500 px requirement for all products from January 31, 2027, so it's worth replacing smaller images before then.
