Google Merchant Center: Generic placeholder image · Generic image [image link] · Placeholder image
Your main image is a placeholder, not the product
What Google's message means
Google found a generic image as the main photo, such as your logo, a 'No image available' graphic or a stock placeholder, instead of a photo of the actual product.
Why it matters
Google keeps products with generic images disapproved until the main image shows the product.
Common causes on Shopify
- Products created without media, so the theme or app shows a placeholder.
- The store logo used as the first image.
- Supplier feeds with 'image coming soon' graphics.
How to fix it
- 1Find products whose first image is a logo, a placeholder or missing entirely.
- 2Upload a real photo of the product and make it the first image.
- 3Use a new image file (new URL) rather than replacing a file at the same URL. Google says that makes it fetch the new image faster.
- 4Let the channel resync.
In Shopify: Some themes and import apps add a placeholder when a product has no media. Check the product's Media section in Shopify, not just the storefront.
How to stop it coming back
- Don't publish products to the Google channel until they have a real photo.
Common questions
- Are placeholders ever allowed?
- Google allows generic images only for certain product categories. For normal physical products the main image must show the product.
