What Google's message means

For Apparel & Accessories, Google requires color, size, gender and age group for Shopping ads in Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US, and for free listings in every country.

Why it matters

Apparel without these attributes is disapproved in those countries and ranks worse elsewhere.

Common causes on Shopify

Variant options are named unusually ('Colour / Size', 'Option1'), so the channel can't map them.
Gender and age group were never filled in for the Google channel.
The product category doesn't tell Google the item is apparel.

How to fix it

1Make sure variant options are named clearly ("Color", "Size") so your feed app can map them.
2Fill in gender and age group in your Google channel or product category fields.
3Set an accurate Google product category so Google knows the item is apparel.

In Shopify: Option names live on the product's Variants section; category fields under Product category.

How to stop it coming back

Use standard option names ('Color', 'Size') on new products.
Set category and Google fields when you create the product, not after a disapproval.
